So, what are 'Art Capsule' toys? Remember coin operated gum ball machines in stores such as Woolies, where you popped your coin into a slot, turned a knob and out popped a toy encased in a plastic ball? Well, that's about it, really. See, you did know.
But hang on a sec, where does the 'art' bit come in? Well, as you may expect it all boils down to those rather groovy Japanese folk who re-worked this classic theme and came up with some totally cool and very hot capsule toys (or gachapon, as they're known in Japan). These 'posh' capsule toys first began life as the 'Sony Art Capsule' series and then as 'Vanimal Zoo' where international artists were invited to invent animals for a fictitious super Zoo. Both sets come under the heading of 'Sony Time Capsule - Art Capsule Toy Project' and feature mini figures designed by some of the world's most cutting edge arty folk.
Note: Due to small parts and the usual choking hazard, none of these figures are suitable for under 3 years old little ones.

Gum Machine Gods
From the mind of Rodney Greenblat, the man behind Parappa the Rappa and Thunder Bunny comes six, franky surreal, little effigies of gachapon gods! Worship them at your leisure. |

Alien Family
Best known for his 'underground' comic Hate, Peter Bagge's typical American family (with a slightly 1950s bent) view of an alien family brings us plenty of surreal figures. We like the doggie best. |

Ushigaeru
We're going to take a guess at what these rather worried looking cows are doing on stage with a crooning froggie! Ushi is Japanese for 'cow' and Kaeru is 'frog' so by combining the two we get 'Ushigaeru' ('ga' replaces the 'ka' when the word is pared with another word) which is what the hirigana characters on the little banners say. There, don't say we don't try hard to work all this stuff out!
It looks to us like the cows are backing singers or maybe just eye-candy whilst Mr.Frog does his super karoke thing! |

Please note: The gold/green ink on this guy is a bit unstable. You may need to give him a wipe every now and then to mop up the excess. The ink wipes off fine and Edward still looks pretty green underneath.

This Venusian (from the plant Venus of course) looks a little like a sad C-3PO and can be posed at the waist and head. In fact his head can be turned all the way around for a completely different looking facial expression!
